Emergency Procedure for Handling a Laptop Spill
If you've accidentally spilled liquid on your laptop, acting quickly can help minimize damage. Follow these steps immediately:
Immediate Actions to Prevent Further Damage:
Turn Off the Laptop – If it's on, press and hold the power button to shut it down immediately.
Unplug from Power – Disconnect the charger to prevent electrical damage.
Remove External Devices – Unplug any USB drives, mice, or other accessories.
Detach the Battery (If Possible) – If your laptop has a removable battery, take it out right away.
Drain Excess Liquid – Hold the laptop upside down to allow the liquid to escape.
Blot, Don’t Wipe – Use a lint-free cloth or paper towels to gently absorb excess liquid without spreading it.
What NOT to Do:
Do NOT turn the laptop back on to check if it’s working—it can cause a short circuit.
Do NOT use a hairdryer or heater—excess heat can damage internal components.
Do NOT shake the laptop—this may spread liquid further inside.
Do NOT put it in rice—rice can leave dust and debris inside.
Drying and Assessing the Laptop’s Condition:
Position the Laptop for Drying – Open the screen and place the laptop upside down in a tent or "V" shape on a dry towel.
Use a Fan – Set up a fan to blow cool air toward the laptop to aid drying.
Wait at Least 24-48 Hours – Let the laptop air dry completely before attempting to turn it on.
Check for Residue or Corrosion – If possible, inspect the keyboard and ports for sticky residue or corrosion.
Helpful Tools & Household Items:
Microfiber cloths – For gentle liquid absorption.
Compressed air – Helps remove moisture from small crevices.
Isopropyl alcohol (90% or higher) – Can be used (with caution) to clean sticky residue.
Signs You Need Professional Repair:
The laptop won’t turn on after drying.
The keyboard or touchpad is unresponsive or malfunctioning.
You hear unusual noises (buzzing, clicking) when powering on.
There’s visible corrosion or discoloration inside.
If your laptop isn’t functioning correctly after following these steps, take it to a professional repair service as soon as possible. Acting fast improves the chances of saving your device!
